Modern Relic........
.....is about bringing together the fascination of the mystic life of nomad tribes in Syria and Jordan with requirements of todays' modern life in big cities.
Nomads in Syria all have in common that they don't stay in one place. Household items and decoration must be easily transportable to be able to move on at any given moment. Furniture were thus traditionally small and practical allowing to carry them on camels and horses. The value of the furniture was in the richness of the ornaments and the resistance of the wood used.
Modern life reduced these nomad movements drastically and people are mainly living in fixed accommodation. Small practical furniture have been replaced by big tables, wardrobes and other massive furniture adapted to a life at one place. Many of the beautiful items which once decorated the tents of nomads and given from generation to generation have been forgotten.
"When I first looked at these little pieces which remained, the doors, drawers, shelves, beautifully decorated , I had this feeling of travelling in the past, seeing nomads travelling through the dessert and decorating their tents with the same furniture at any new place and from generation to generation" says Maria von Kirchmann, the artist creating ModernRelic furniture. "I could feel the soul in these relics of a rich period, forgotten today and condemned to become dust one day. I wanted to give these pieces a new life and integrate them in today's living habits...being practical , beautiful and having a mystic soul".
